Description: From a Catalina Foothills estate in Tucson is this original proof etching of "An Old Gate" by Michael Coleman, a splendid early career depiction. The offered artwork is delicately rendered in an almost Whistlerian manner, a demonstration of skill further imbued with a characteristic sense of utter authenticity. A sensitive selective wiping of plate tone is especially noteworthy. It is pencil signed "Michael Coleman" at lower right below the indent and numbered "9/10" at lower left - a very small hand pulled edition, meaning this image is not often seen. There is further "306 8 10" ink stamped at the extreme upper left margin, perhaps relating to an apparent penchant for recycling vintage paper for use in some of his printed editions. Michael B. Coleman (1946-) is an Utah artist primarily known as a painter, printmaker, and sculptor of Western and Southwestern American subject matter. Michael spent his boyhood years fishing and hunting in the Rocky Mountains, often with sketchbook in hand. These direct observational experiences, coupled with a large dollop of talent, paid dividends early on - a first retrospective came in 1978 at age 32, at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. Michael has exhibited at the National Academy of Design and at New York's Kennedy galleries. He won the Prix de West Prize at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in 1999, for his sculpture "September". Put another way, Michael Coleman is no Sunday painter, printmaker, or sculptor, and it always shows. His uncommon intaglio prints are often smaller jewel like affairs as in the case of this desirable beauty. Printed in very low number editions they convey the same almost palpable atmospheric evocation of his five figure oils, simply on a more approachable scale. Condition appears quite fine, a crisp well inked impression showing that nuanced wiping of plate tone. The sheet is clean with nice margins visible within the mat opening. The Aaron Brothers frame is also in pretty good shape, meaning it can go right on a wall. I see no earthshaking issues to report, and I typically nitpick for the obsessive. A look at the pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition. Plate indent is about 5 7/8 in. horizontal and 4 15/16 in. vertical.. The sheet is about 8 1/8 in. horizontal and 6 in. vertical. The frame is about 12 1/8 in. horizontal and 10 in. vertical.
