MGL EXPLORER When we queried MGL tech support about the four M3 mounting screws and how they seemed kinda too close to the panel edge to wear a nut, we got this: “Yes – the holes are close – unfortunately. We use M3 rivnuts to screw the display down. The flange of the rivnut will need to be shaved but it will be well worth it. Adam” So we modeled up a rivnut and being fatter then the M3 screw it would hold, even its mounting hole went through the edge - see screenshot Just as rivets have a specified minimum edge distance (to avoid bowing the edge as they get squeezed) , it looks as though you’d have the same problem with installing a squeeezed Rivnut… and that’s before you “shave it down”. It all sounded a bit too sketchy for mounting several $ thousands worth of EFIS and then going out & doing Acro; so we made these tapped stainless plates that will do the job instead. Waterjet cut from Non-magnetic 304 Stainless (in case there are magnetically sensitive instruments nearby in your panel), minimized weight and pre-tapped M3 x 0.5 for the button head screws provided. The kit includes 2 plates, 6 screws ( 2 spares) and a 2mm Allen key. We only made 10 kits because the feeling is that MGL will probably be be making this problem go away soon.
