Signed on the upper margin of the title page: Wash Hood Lieut. U. S. Army. Washington Hood is famous for having made many Maps for the army. As a lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers in 1835 he was on a map making expedition with then Lieutenant Robert E. Lee to survey and map the disputed Michigan-Ohio border dispute known as the Toledo War. Later in Florida, as captain he mapped the territory of the Seminole Wars. His most important mapping was the Oregon Territory where his maps were central to the settlement of Oregon. There are fifteen army reports including much state and territorial topographical information of this formative period, also Indian affairs, and Indian emigration. Stabbed and sewn original untrimmed signatures in original state as published but string has been replaced. Very good with sheets having occasional light foxing, unmarked, complete.
