The Medical and Surgical History is to Civil War medicine what the Army Official Records is to the Campaigns. This original, antique book set is in excellent condition. This is a complete, original, antique book set professionally rebound in matching new covers with new end pages. Bound in green covers with bright, gold lettering in the spine the exteriors are clean, sharp, bright and in fine condition with no wear, rubbing or bumping. The interiors are also in excellent condition. The pages are clean with no smudging, pasteboards, or stamps. The only writing is the “U.S. War Dept. Medical Dept” written in pencil of on two of the title pages and a vintage signature on one title page (I have not evaluated the signature to determine if it was to a Civil War soldier.) Some pages in volume I have waterstaining. A few pages have light foxing, but most are fine. There are some impressed library stamps on a couple of pages in two of the books, but no other markings or pockets. Two pages have tears to the corners. The book set has solid binding and all hinges are fine. The books are richly illustrated throughout with full-color lithographs, wood-cut illustrations, full-page plates and field maps.
