Description: Here are 2 issues of The Mayflower for August and September,1895. The magazine was published by John Lewis Childs(1856-1921). In 1875, he created the first American mail order seed and bulb company. He was so successful that the town of Floral Park on Long Island, New York, literally grew up around the business. The magazine had brief articles on all aspects of flower and vegetable gardening in all parts of the country and world. There's also a column on birds - Childs was an ardent ornithologist. Each of these issues has a beautiful color chromolithograph - one of a new variety of Japan Lilies and the other of a variety of bulbs. There's also a column co-edited by Mrs. Henry Ward Beecher, who wrote several books on housekeeping, and was the wife of the famous and infamous preacher. The last 4 pages of the September issue are a catalog of bylbs. The 8 1/2 by 12 inch magazines are paged 129-160 and 193-224. The covers are toned with chips, and the pages are toned and fragile. The red ink on the back September cover has run onto the back side.
