Description: Matchbox Models of YesteryearY12-3 1912 Ford Model T Van Choice of Models The Lesney toy company was formed by two school friends, Leslie Smith and Rodney Smith (unrelated) - the company name being a contraction of their two first names - shortly after the end of World War 2. The two Smiths were very soon joined by Jack Odell, who had been an employee at the same diecasting firm Rodney had previously worked for. Rodney Smith left the business early on. It was Leslie Smith and Jack Odell who created the "Matchbox" series of model vehicles, and the company grew to be one of the most successful diecast manufacturers in the world, with the brand name still in existence today, now under the ownership of Mattel. Jack Odell had a particular liking for vintage and antique vehicles, and was very keen to produce a range of models depicting such classics. Thus, the "Models of Yesteryear" series was launched in 1956. Apparently Smith initially opposed the new line, especially the word "yesteryear", which he pointed out could not be found in any dictionary of the day, but the name stuck and Models of Yesteryear became a worldwide phenomenon with collectors that still endures today. Based on the undying and sturdy Model T chassis, this robust and efficient van served many tradesmen throughout the 1910s and 1920s, the basic shape not changing for almost 20 years. Generally good condition. Not playworn but previously on display and may have the odd chip or scratch, dirty mark or be slightly dusty.
