Description: Mata Ortiz Pottery Artist: Martha Hernandez - First Generation Hand Made - Rolled Coil & Pinch Method - Sanded Smooth - Then Hand Painted Hand Painted A beautiful turtle has traditional Paquime design hand painted on the shell of the turtle. This precious piece is made by Martha Hernandez who lives in the village - pueblo of Mata Ortiz. All pieces are totally hand made clear down to the gathering the clay - rinsing the clay to make useable - coil rolling the clay to start building the piece. Piece will be boxed, and bubble wrapped and then put into another box with additional packing materials for very safe shipping to the piece new home and owner. MATA ORTIZ POTTERY STORY: Is a recreation of the Mogollon pottery found in and around the archeological site of Casas Grandes (Paquime') in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Named after the modern town of Mata Ortiz, which is near the archeological site, the style was propagated by Juan Quezada Celado. Quezada learned on his own to recreate this ancient pottery and then went on to update it. By the mid 1970's, Quezada was selling his pottery and teaching family and friends to make it and the pottery was able to penetrate the U.S. markets thanks to traders. By the 1990's, the pottery was being shown in museums and other cultural institutions and sold in fine galleries. The success of the pottery, which is sold for aesthetic rather than its utilitarian value, has brought the town of Mata Ortiz out of poverty, with most of its populations earning income from the industry, directly or indirectly.
