Description: A MASSIVE GERMAN ASTRONOMY BOOK FROM THE EARLY DAYS OF ASTROPHYSICS COVERING TELESCOPES, SPECTROSCOPY, AND OTHER ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES ALONG WITH DESCRIPTIONS OF PLANETS, STARS, AND NEBULAE POPULÄRE ASTROPHYSIK By Dr. J. Scheiner 1912 Leipzig (2nd) Edition in German, with a decorative cover. 210 Engravings in text and 30 full-page plates. Description: Dr. J[ulius] Scheiner POPULÄRE ASTROPHYSIK (2nd edition) [Popular Astrophysics] Leipzig: B.G. Teubner Verlag, 1912, 6.5 x 9.5 in., 722 pp. plus 30 full page plates at the end; 210 engravings in text. Condition: Bound in gray cloth with gilt and black design of sun and spectrograph on cover. Otherwise clean, securely bound, and unmarked throughout. Overall VG condition. Information: An important work, written in German, a complement to the work of Lockyer (who worked on the sun), describing the (then) new science of spectral analysis for the general public, along with information on the physical nature of the sun, moon, comets, planets, stars, and nebulae as learned from spectroscopy, photometry, polarimetry, etc. Excellent and not widely published engravings of many instruments, telescopes, and astrophotographs. Chapters (my translation) include: Astrophysical Methods: Physical and Physiological Fundamentals; Spectrum Analysis; Photometry; The Measurement of the Radiant Heat of the Sun; Photography of the Heavens; The Results of Astrophysical Research: The Scun; Planets, Moon, Komets, Meteors, Zodiacal Light; Nebulae; The Fixed Stars; A most desirable work for those interested in the history of astronomy, 18th century astronomy, astrophysics, spectra, telescopes, etc., etc. Biographical Note: Julius Scheiner (1858–1913) was a German astronomer, born in Cologne and educated at Bonn. He became assistant at the astrophysical observatory in Potsdam in 1887 and its observer in chief in 1898, three years after his appointment to the chair of astrophysics in the University of Berlin. Scheiner paid special attention to celestial photography and wrote Die Spektralanalyse der Gestirne (1890); Lehrbuch der Photographie der Gestirne (1897); Strahlung und Temperatur der Sonne (1899); Der Bau des Weltalls (1901); third edition, 1909). In 1899 he began the publication of the Photographische Himmelskarte; Zone +31° bis +40° Deklination. He is also credited with developing the first system for measuring the sensitivity of photographic emulsions in 1894, Scheinergrade, which also inspired the later DIN 4512 standard to measure film speeds.
