Description: Item Description: For sale today is a solid state flash module based MSM or Mass Storage Module for Data I/O 2900 and 3900 programmers. This board as shipped will also provide the parallel port circuitry required to make a 3900 into a 3980 XPI. The parallel port does not work with the 2900 as Data I/O did not support the parallel port in the 2900 software. You will need to make your own parallel port cable. Information on making a cable can be found on the Data I/O group at groups.io on line. The first picture is the board, the second is how the board installs in a 2900/3900 (2900/3900 not included). Condition: This is a new (hand assembled) MSM for the 2900 and 3900 series programmers. It makes a 3900 into a 3980, not sure what the 2900 would be called with the MSM installed.. With this module the system boots in about 30-40 seconds not including self test time. No more floppy disks needed except to copy your software to the flash drive. The flash drive comes pre-formatted with the required C, D, H, and I partitions. You will have to transfer your software to the MSM by booting from floppy and copying the software (see the 3900 manual for instructions). There also instructions on line in the DATA I/O forum at Groups.IO.If you are upgrading the software to a new software version, do the upgrade from floppy disk before installing the MSM board. The upgrade occurs when booting from the system floppy that has the newer version of the software. The upgrade to the new version of software also updates the boot FLASH on the main board. It is best to do this from floppy without the additional load from the MSM on the data bus. Two spacers are included for assembly, instructions follow: 1. Remove the top cover by removing 3 screws (under the foam on older models) and two screws in the back and pulling it up. 2. Remove two screws from the main board, use the holes in the MSM opposite the connector to locate the screws.3. Install the spacers in place of the two screws removed in step 2. 4. Plug board into the mating connector on the 3900 main board (the MSM connector is is keyed with a missing pin to match the main board connector).5. Install the two screws removed in step 2 through the MSM board into the spacers installed in step 3. 6. To use the parallel port connector, you will need to punch a hole for the DB25 connector on the back panel and wire the connector to the board mating connector Note, the board connector is pinned out along the long end as marked on the board, not alternating odd/even pins on the rows like most two row headers. This was the Data I/O convention for these connectors back in the day....7. Replace the top cover in reverse order from step 1. Software must be version 6.1 or later to use the MSM. These boards were tested on a 3900 (same interface as the 2900) with V9.4. Additional info: The original MSMs in some of these units used PCMCIA drives. The PCMCIA drive format was short lived due to their fragility and short life span. A failed drive will lock up the 3900, even if booting from a floppy disk. A PCMCIA MSM board without a PCMCIA drive installed can also lock up the 3900.
