Born in 1831, Marco Aurelio Rojas was an exceptional man from an exceptional family. Marco's father was the notable economist, bookseller, and publisher José María Rojas Ramos, and his mother, Dolores Espaillat Velilla, was the aunt of the Dominican president Ulises Espaillat. Marco became a doctor of medicine at the age of 24, but it seems that the natural sciences were his true passion. Marco and his brother Carlos Eduardo Rojas both worked with the French explorer and entomologist, Auguste Sallé after his arrival in Venezuela in 1846. In 1857, Marco authored and published the first edition of El Reino Animal through the publishing company that he and his brothers took over after his father's death. The family is best known in Venezuela as the originators and publishers of the Almanaque Rojas Hermanos, which is an almanac that has been published every year since 1871.
