Description: This elegant, lidded claret jug is hallmarked Mappin Brothers Sheffield 1895. The handsome, hand-cut crystal jug has a substantial sterling silver mounting. The family firm was founded ca 1810 by Joseph Mappin, and their sun trademark was granted in 1835 by the Cutlers' Company. They were not known as Mappin Brothers until after 1852 when all four of Joseph Mappin's sons had joined the company, after his death. It was in 1903 that Mappin & Webb bought Mappin Bros, and became Mappin & Webb (Mappin Bros incorporated) and the firms were finally united.
