MAGDA OLIVERO (soprano) with The Concertgebouw conducted by Fulvio Vernizzi and Anton Kersjes. CD contains arias broadcast from the Concertgebouw in 1962, 1963, 1964, 1968, and 1972, as well as a dress rehearsal. The recording's producer, Denis Robert, has been allowed access to Olivero's own private recordings, and this is the first disc in a series that will eventually comprise 12 issues. This installment is devoted to Olivero's core repertoire of Italian lyric dramatic roles, with Puccini the composer most heavily represented, with 13 of the 19 selections. All of the arias on this disc were recorded at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw on seven different dates from 1962 to 1972. The first six items are taken from a dress rehearsal prior to the 1962 concert, but such is the level of commitment and intensity that one would hardly believe this wasn't the main event. Olivero's plaintive timbre with reserves of power and moments of heartbreaking expressivity are all present, captured here in rich, vibrant voice with surprisingly good sound. Nearly every track is a winner, but highlights include the singer's magical diminuendo in "Vissi d'arte," a notably intense "Spunta 1'aurora pallida" from Mefistofele and, especially, the subtle and complex expression Olivero draws from Alfano's Risurrezione aria. The wild intensity and abandon of the final scene from Manon Lescaut is shattering -and Olivero's final scene from Butterfly is on the same level. Yet Olivero can then turn from her dramatic side to provide a reading of Mimi's act 1 aria, which, in its vivacity and eager youthfulness, spoils one for all other recordings of this thrice-familiar music. Only a somewhat edgy "O mio babbino caro" disappoints, and the two 1972 recordings included here caught the singer late in her career, when her voice had taken on a more matronly tone with rather squally top notes.
