Description: Mabel Catherine Robinson ARE (1875-1953) “On the Canche” Original Signed Titled Etching Signed by the artist right side lower margin. Plate: 230 x 155 Sheet: 300 x 220. Printed on cream thin wove paper. Etching is loose and paper hinged from the top, and mounted with modern cream colour mounting board measuring overall 400 x 300. Included W R Deighton London dealers label. The River Canche flows through Picardy and Pas de Calais region in northern France draining in to the English Channel. A favourite haunt of canoeists today. Mabel Robinson won admission to the Royal Academy schools at Burlington House after attending Lambeth School of Art during a time when women found it more difficult to gain acceptance to such institutions. In 1908 she became an Associate at the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and was recorded as the first to do so. She had studied under the tutelage of Sir Frank Short. She exhibited widely including at the Royal Academy. Her married name was Mrs Mabel Barnes. There are various works by Robinson including many of France which she visited frequently. Condition is good with no foxing, tears, damage or creasing. Minor paper rippling confined mainly margins. Overall nice condition. Photos in natural daylight. No digital enhancing.
