Description: Lieutenant Colonel John E. Howard Honored on the 7th in the U.S. Mint's 10 piece series of pewter reproductions of America's First Medals, voted by the Continental Congress to commemorate the decisive military actions of the Revolutionary War. This medal was awarded to Lieutenant Colonel Howard for his courageous leadership of the main line bayonet charge at the Battle of Cowpens. Originally struck in silver, it was engraved by Pierre Simon Benjamin Duvivier, chief engraver of the Paris Mint. On the obverse, in Latin, is the inscription, "The American Congress to John Eager Howard, commander of a regiment of infantry." Colonel Howard, on horseback, pursues an enemy foot soldier who is carrying away a standard. A winged Victory hovers over him, holding in her right hand a crown of laurel and in her left a palm branch. On the reverse, inscribed in Latin within a laurel wreath are the words "Because by rushing suddenly on the wavering lines of the enemy, he gave a brilliant example of martial courage at the Battle of the Cowpens, January 1781." The Battle of Cowpens General Daniel Morgan had formed his small force into three lines, planning to make a stand near a winter cattle enclosure in northwestern South Carolina against men dispatched by the British General Cornwallis. Morgan's major hope was centered in the main line of militia headed by Colonel Howard and the reserve of cavalry under Lieutenant Colonel William Washington. The British penetrated first the skirmishers and then the second line militia, thinking they had won an easy victory. But they were met instead with deadly fire and a bayonet attack from Howard's militia. At one point, Howard held in his hands the swords of seven British officers who had surrendered to him. He so distinguished himself that he was awarded the silver medal by Act of Congress dated March 9, 1781.
