Description: Shipping | POLICIES AND INFORMATION LOVELY! 1910 Antique VANTINE Nippon MORIAGE Porcelain HP TEA CADDY Covered Jar Backside marked with the earliest VANTINE mark, Crossed Imperial Chinese and Japanese flags with the Turkish crescent moon and star in-between, referring to the company's business relations with these three countries. This mark was used circa-1910. Stands 6" tall, to top of lid finial.. Displays beautifully, with a very very faint spider-type glaze crazing to interior, as shown in bottom photo. (not visible from bottom of jar, and barely noticeable from interior.) No other chips, nicks, cracks, hairlines, scratches, stains, or repairs. Guaranteed to be antique, and not a modern reproduction! Around the 1840s Ashley A. Vantine started a provision and supply business in San Francisco. He continued in California until 1869, when he came to New-York and established himself in the Oriental goods business, opening his first shop for oriental wares in New York in 1869 on Broadway. Mr. Vantine traveled a great deal, particularly to China and Japan, crossing the Pacific sixteen times and made six visits to Turkey and Southern Russia. (thus the mark on the bottom of this piece.) The company started a mail order business and came to have their own factories in Yokohama and Nagoya, Japan.
