Description: This is a custom 12" figure commemorating one of the best known female gamblers of the Old West, Lottie Deno. Carlotta J. Thompkins (her presumed real given name) was born in Kentucky April 21st, 1844. She died February 9th, 1934. Lottie was born to a wealthy family. Her father was horse breeder and a prominent gambler. It was said that he would take his daughter with him on trips where he taught her the secrets of winning at cards in the best casinos. When her father died (she was 17) in the Civil War, Lottie's mother sent her to Detroit to find a husband. When her money ran out, Lottie started gambling on the Mississippi River boats. She would end up in San Antonio, Tx. There she started working as a house gambler at the University Club. Lottie met and fell in love there with another gambler named Frank Thurmond. After Frank was accused of murder the couple fled the area. They would travel through the territories of Texas for many years. Texas was booming at the time with cowboys and traders flush with money, so the couple gambled successfully. Fort Griffin was were Carlotta got the name Lottie Deno. After a successful run at poker one night where she beat all comers, a drunken cowboy exclaimed "with all those winnings you should change your name to "Lotta Dinero". Lottie is said to have played with some of the best / most famous gamblers of the old west including Doc Holliday. Lottie and Frank would eventually marry and give up their gambling lives. They settled in Deming, New Mexico where they became respected citizens. Frank would become vice president of the local bank. Lottie founded a church financed with her winnings. Lottie Deno is another interesting character of the old West. One side note- it is said that the character of Miss Kitty Russell on the great western tv series Gunsmoke (1950's-1970's), was based on Lottie Deno. Please note that while the figure does not look exactly like Lottie Deno, there is a bit of a resemblance. Figure designed mainly for display purposes for the wild west fan. sold as is. stand included. This would make a nice addition to any collection. Please note the following-when a figure is a custom figure that means it is not a licensed product,or "official" but something the customizer did by combining figures and accessories from different makers and toy releases to come up with the custom figure or figures. I started customizing figures a few years back because I couldn't find more than a handful of "official" releases and unable to find figures of people I wanted to collect. I checked in to the market of custom figures. Most of the custom figures available back then cost several hundred dollars, so, I started doing my own. Because I needed to support my new hobby, I started selling some custom figures. My prices reflect my acquisition cost, time involved, and some profit.
