Bulgarian nation owes him setting them free from Turkish oppression, when after the won war against Turkey in 1878 Alexander recommended a creation of Bulgaria on conquered lands. He proposed modestly his candidature for the ruler of Bulgaria. The throne was eventually taken by Alexander I from Battenberg dynasty, but nevertheless Bulgaria regained independence. To honour the liberator, Bulgarians have constructed a cathedral, given his name to one of the avenues in Sofia and built a monument Tsar Liberator (Цар Освободител) at National Assembly Square in Sofia. 50 stotinki from 1977thickness:weight:thickness:alloy:23.0 mm4.0 g1.4 mm CuNiobverse:above the coin centre Coat of Arms of People's Republic of Bulgaria; below in three lines: 50 / СТОТИНКИ / 1977 (face value 50 stotinki and year of issue)reverse:athlete with a torch running left; on the left in three lines: УНИВЕРСИАДА / СОФИЯ / 1977 (Universiade Sofia 1977)edge:reededissue date:1 VIII 1977withdrawal date:31 XII 1997designer:Стефан Ненов, Георги Чапкънов (initials CH and ГЧ below Coat of Arms on the obverse)(Stefan Nenov, Georgi Chapkunov)mint:Монетен двор (The Mint), Sofiamintage:19772 000 000interesting facts:This coin was struck to commemorate hosting of the Summer Universiade in Bulgaria in 1977.
