Shiwan porcelain mudman figures depicts the legendary Chinese doctor Hua Tuo in five poses representing the 5 different animals from his Wuqinxi, "Exercises of the Five Animals." - In each statue, Hua Tuo is rendered with detailed facial features such as great cheekbones, realistic hand gestures, flowing robes and precise poses with his double gourd tied around his waist. - Hua Tuo 華佗 was a legendary Chinese doctor known for his surgical skills and for being the first person in China to use anesthesia in surgery called Mafeisan 麻沸散 during the Eastern Han Dynasty and the Three Kingdoms era in China. He is often depicted with a double gourd presumably containing his anesthetic concoction. - He developed Wuqinxi 五禽戲 by examining the movements of the five animals: tiger, deer, bear, monkey, and crane in order to encourage exercise and good health. Wuqinxi is consider a qigong or taichi exercise in martial arts.
