LOOKING FOR MR. GOODBAR (1977) Region Free DVD – Diane Keaton

Description: This is a DVD of Richard Brooks’ 1977 film Looking for Mr. Goodbar starring Diane Keaton, Richard Gere, and Tuesday Weld. The same version available elsewhere on this site, I bought this new from a major online retailer that credits its manufacture to Australia’s La Entertainment, though that name doesn’t appear on the disc or case. “Grindhouse Inn” is the production company credited when the disc loads. The case says it’s region-free and NTSC and it plays fine on my player. The disc and picture quality do not make it look like an official release (and there are spelling errors in the text on the packaging). It is watchable if a bit blocky/splotchy, a preamble says this was “prepared from the best source materials available.” The case says the aspect ratio is 4:3, but instead looks to be a picture-boxed 1.85:1. I assume the original theatrical ratio has been preserved, which is good, but if you are watching on a modern television you will have black bars at top, bottom, and sides of the picture. “Raised in a strict Catholic family, Theresa (Diane Keaton) teaches deaf children during the day and cruises singles bars and discos at night. Theresa favors rough sex with randm [sic] suitors, ignoring the advances of well-meaning but nerdy social worker James (William Atherton). Instead, Theresa pusues [sic]the likes of Tony (Richard Gere), whose threatening knife and swagger excite her. Theresa undulges [sic] in increasingly dangerous encounters, putting her life at risk.” 1977. Color, pictureboxed, approx. 1.85:1 aspect ratio. In English, no optional subtitles. NTSC. 2 hours 16 minutes. ITEM CONDITION: Bought this new from a major retailer. The disc itself is like new. The case has some light wear. No insert or booklet came with this item.
