Description: You are bidding on a large, very rare original antique engraving from an 1870s French illustrated journal. It depicts a guanaco (wild llama lama ) hunt in Patagonia south America. The Patagonian native americans and officers with the British HMS Le Nassau ship pursue the animals on horseback. THe Indians are catching the llamas with Bolas. The bola (boleadoras or Inca ayllo) is a type of throwing weapon made of weights on the ends of interconnected cords, designed to capture animals by entangling their legs. They were most famously used by the gauchos (Argentinian cowboys), but have been found in excavations of Pre-Columbian settlements, especially in Patagonia, where indigenous peoples used them to catch 200-pound guanaco (llama-like mammals) and ñandú (birds). Also included with the print is a second page from the same journal with an 11-inch article. It is in French, but free computer translation programs make it easy to translate. The caption reads: Chasse au guanaco, lama sauvage, dans l'amerique du Sudwhich roughly translates to: Guanaco hunt, wild llama, in South AmericaIt is very large (folio size), measuring approximately 10.5 x 14.5 inches (26.5 x 36.5 cm). The picture fills most of the page, with a French caption below. The page is in excellent condition for its age. There is text/photos on the back of the print.
