There are numerous species of horned lizards (often popularly called horned toads) in the genus Phrynosoma. Although they are reptiles and not related to either frogs or toads, the name "Phrynosoma" means "toad-bodied," so named because of the animal's appearance. Horned lizards inhabit the western deserts of the United States and Mexico, thriving in the hot, dry climate. They eat insects, ants, beetles, grashoppers, and other tiny animals. A horned toad's defenses include camouflage, running, and squirting blood from the eye. This can cause confusion to the predator, but does not seem to bother birds. The spines and "horns" often dissuade their animal preditors, but are not dangerous to humans beyond a small poke. They don't bite, and are considered harmless. When I was a youngster and we'd catch horned toads on my dad's ranch, I was fooled into dropping one when it squirted blood. I though I'd damaged the animal, even though I was being very careful!
