The name was originally Sanseverinia, given by Vincenzo Petagna in 1787 to honor his patron, Pietro Antonio Sanseverino, the Count of Chiaromonte. Carl Peter Thunberg later changed the name to Sansevieria in 1794, though it's unclear if this was intentional or a typo. The specific epithet trifasciata is a combination of the Latin words tri meaning "three" and fasciatus meaning "banded". This refers to the many leaf markings on the snake plant.
