These radio broadcasts capture Armstrong's aptly-named big band, the All-Stars, at their peak. The June 1947 show at New York's Winter Garden Theatre consists entirely of New Orleans music. As the city's most famous native son, Armstrong knew New Orleans music better than anyone, and his band, featuring cornetist Bobby Hackett and trombonist Jack Teagarden, sounds like they've been playing "Basin Street Blues" and Tiger Rag" all their lives. The second broadcast, recorded December 1948 at Chicago's Blue Note, ranges from Kid Ory's classic "Muskrat Ramble" and W.C. Handy's "St. Louis Blues" to pop standards like "I've Got A Right To Sing the Blues." The band, this time featuring Teagarden and pianist Earl "Fatha" Hines, swings throughout. Professional Reviews: JazzTimes (10/97, p.91) - "...good sidemen notwithstanding, Armstrong's own personal magic...is what most commands the attention..."
