Lafayette Railroad Celebrating the southern roots of Little Feat’s innovative and influential brand of rock & roll, Dixie Chicken captures the exuberant ensemble work and stylistic dexterity that made this group a favorite among music aficionados throughout the 70s. Formed in 1969 around the formidable talents of singer/songwriter/ guitarist Lowell George, Little Feat’s initial lineup consisted of classically trained keyboardist Bill Payne, drummer Richard Hayward (who had played with George in the mid-’60s folk rock group Factory) and former Mothers of Invention bassist Roy Estrada. The quartet released their debut album, Little Feat, in late 1969 to lavish critical acclaim. It was followed in February of 1972 with Sailin' Shoes. Both LP’s showcased George’s sharply-honed songwriting and a range of styles that, from one track to the next, evoked virtually every major American musical form, from gospel to rockabilly, blues to Dixieland jazz. Following the release of Sailin’ Shoes, Estrada left the group to rejoin the Mothers of Invention. He was replaced by bassist Ken Gradney. Little Feat’s lineup was further augmented by conga-player Sam Clayton and guitarist Paul Barrere. The re-grouped six-piece band entered the studio in late 1972 to begin work on a third Little Feat album. The result was Dixie Chicken, a ten-song collection that paid particular tribute to the rich musical heritage of New Orleans (both Gradney and Clayton were New Orleans-bred musicians). Included in the Dixie Chicken tune stack is “On Your Way Down,” written by the legendary New Orleans artist Allen Toussaint, who would subsequently tour with Little Feat. A supple, funk-tinged feel pervades on Dixie Chicken, most notably on the Lowell George originals - such memorable cuts as “Two Trains” and “Fat Man In The Bathtub” - and the George/Payne collaboration, “Lafayette Railroad.” Following the release of Dixie Chicken, Little Feat embarked on an extensive round of touring, establishing an extensive concert following, particularly in the deep South.
