Description: Limoges Guerin Cider Pitcher 80 Oz Artist Perley Red Grapes Vines w/Gold 1916 Elegant Decorative Stately 6 1/4" Tall CIDER PITCHER from William Guerin & Co. Limoges, France, Smooth Rim, Brown Scrollwork on Handle, Hand Painted RED GRAPES & GREEN LEAVES w/Gold w/Artist Signature, circa 1900-1932 DESCRIPTION: The artist, Perley, was very talented with wonderfully realistic hanging red cherries nestled among the green & gold leaves. The three.large grape sprays are connected around the pitcher by brown scrollwork vines. The area enclosed by the vines is painted a warm tan color The sturdy handle is smooth and painted with brown scrollwork that mimics the brown vines. The smooth rim is painted a bold gold. The outside is a cream color while the inside is the high white of the porcelain. The artist did a wonderful job on designing this cider pitcher. CONDITION: While this pitcher is classified as used, the condition is superb. The only issue is a small spot of glaze skip in the manufacturing process (shown in photo #10) and dark smudges on the matte green (shown in photo #15). We find no nicks, chips, scratches, cracks, hairlines, or repairs. There appears to be absolutely no wear to the paint or gold and no crazing. Look in the photos to see this. The lack of utensil scratches on the pitcher attests to the high quality of the porcelain china. This is very sturdy weighing 35.0 ounces. DIMENSIONS: The cider pitcher has a maximum diameter of 7 3/8" and a height of 6 1/4" to the top of the spout. The measurement from the handle to the opposite side is 9 1/4". Its capacity is 10 cups. HISTORY/MARKS: William Guerin, Limoges France, established his firm in 1873 and exported large quantities of chinaware primarily to the USA. After he acquired the Jean Pouyat Company and WWI caused porcelain production to be drastically curtailed, the merged companies were acquired by Bawo & Dotter in 1920. The green underglaze backstamp on this piece is identified as mark #3 and was used in the 1900-1932 time period according to Mary Frank Gaston in her book, Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd edition. The artist's signature, Perley, is on the bottom with the date, 1916. Please view all pictures carefully as they are part of the description.
