Description: Limited Editions Club_The Prince_Niccolo Machiavelli_1954_Leather_Slipcase_Good Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE I have my share of full-leather Easton Press and Franklin Library books and while they are marvelous pieces of bookbinding craftsmanship, there comes a point where they all begin to look the same. Limited Editions Club is horse of a different color. From the internet: The Limited Editions Club of New York was started in 1929 by George Macy (who would also produce Heritage Press editions). At 29-years-old, he was an avid reader who wanted to make his living from books. His business revolved around publishing beautifully illustrated classic titles in relatively small quantities with club members paying a subscription. The Limited Editions Club is famous for original illustrations by the best book illustrators and artists. Between 1929 and 1985, 10 to 12 titles featuring 1,500 numbered copies each were published annually although the print run expanded to 2,000 numbered copies in later years. Each title was unique, using special papers, special cover material including many in leather, almost all came in a slipcase or clamshell box, many of the titles were already regarded as classics and produced by small private presses throughout the world, almost all were signed by either the illustrator, author, publisher or designer. Sometimes three signatures can be found on the colophon page. This numbered volume (#470/1500) is fully bound in leather with decorative gold gilt pattern on the front and back boards. There is some age-wear and minor material loss on the top of the spine but otherwise very good. Gold gilt title and publisher on the spine, still shiny. The book comes with several pieces of ephemera --- the Limited Editions Club monthly newsletter, a flyer advertising the book and another separate sheet copied from Bodoni's guide to good type design, originally written in 1788. According to the advertisement, "the pages are composed in monotype Bodoni, and they are printed on Della Robbia rag paper. The composition and the printing have been done by Irvin Silvers at the Garamond Press in Baltimore. The binding is of full leather: a hand-crushed, hand-rolled goatskin or morocco. It is decorated in gold leaf with a design copying a book in the library of Lorenzo the Magnificent. Each copy is placed in a dull-gold slipcase." The slipcase was cracking along one corner so I reinforced it with clear tape. Otherwise, it is in very good condition. Please see pics for condition details. In today's world of mass market production, Limited Editions Club books continue to be sought-after by collectors and for good reason --- limited production runs, quality materials, top artists and illustrators. Book will be well-packaged and promptly shipped via USPS Medial Mail.
