After ten months of rest and relaxation (one of the longest vacations KISS has ever had in its career), Paul Stanley, Bruce Kulick, Eric Carr and Gene Simmons regrouped in Los Angeles with producer Ron Nevison to record Crazy Nights (originally titled Who Dares Wins). While writing material for this album, Stanley confronted Simmons about his lack of involvement in KISS' overall direction. Fortunately, Simmons understood his partner's argument and his responsibility to the band; he agreed to make KISS his number-one priority as they completed the album. Crazy Nights was released in September 1988, and proved to be another milestone for KISS with three smash singles and videos for “Crazy, Crazy Nights,” “Reason to Live,” and "Turn on the Night." Crazy Nights hit #18 in Billboard and became KISS’ fourth consecutive Platinum album since 1983’s Lick It Up. Although KISS did not tour outside the United States for Asylum, they certainly did for Crazy Nights: Canada, England, Italy, France and Japan (the first time KISS had performed there since 1978!) were invaded with an upgraded version of the Asylum stage, proving that good things come to those who wait. Before the completion of the Crazy Nights tour in October 1988, KISS became involved with several projects. First, the band played vintage KISS classics at various small clubs in New York and London to celebrate the band’s fifteenth anniversary. In August, KISS played England's famous Monsters of Rock festival for the first time. In November, Smashes. Thrashes and Hits (a compilation album with two new tracks) was released to commemorate the group’s history. As the 1980s came to a close, KISS took another extended vacation before writing songs for their next record, Hot in the Shade. ~ Robert V.
