Philip II reformed the Macedonian military and took Macedon from a backwater frontier kingdom to the preminent power in Greece. He was planning an invasion of Persia when he was assassinated in 336 BCE. Upon his death, his son Alexander III used the veteran Macedonian army to launch his father's invasion and in doing so would go down in history as Alexander the Great.
