Description: Kibbutz Makom : report from an Israeli kibbutz / by Amia Lieblich LANGUAGE: ENGLISH VG CONDITION, HARDCOVER Israeli psychologist Lieblich (Tin Soldiers on Jerusalem Beach) aims through these interviews to provide not ""a precise or objective history"" of her selected kibbutz, but to reflect ""the perspective of current and former members."" She fails, however, to supply sufficient historical background or critical commentary to give the interview material real meaning. Pro-kibbutz when she came to Makom, Lieblich departed ""with the same positive attitude."" The result is much applause, and little questioning. Members are haloed: Rivka, in her worn clothes and loose hairdo, is ""a remarkable woman. . . her face is frank and expressive, her voice loud and warm""; 63-year-old Na'ama--""in her behavior, in her manner of speech, in the way she walks on the path""--is ""someone distinguished, an aristocrat of sorts."" Lieblich focuses on three periods: the time of settlement; the 1952 division, when some 200 members left Makom for a second kibbutz, and another 200 arrived from a third kibbutz to replace them; and life at the kibbutz today. The pioneers say the expected: one recalls the glory of the early days--the ""stubborn will to build the kibbutz, to settle the area [that] inspired us""; another bemoans the growing individualism and speaks of the need to educate the young in kibbutz values. To David, the political leader, the kibbutz reality surpassed the dream; the problem now is ""how to live with our wealth, how to avoid becoming ugly because of material abundance."" But for lack of authorial input, the connections are vague. The 1952 kibbutz division is described as painful for all concerned; we never know, however, which of the suggested causes to credit--internal kibbutz politics? divergent attitudes toward Russia? a conflict between kibbutz autonomy and Ben Gurion's views on the state? The historical segments do at least contain some drama; at present, the greatest tension appears to be between community and individual values. Some outsiders can be absorbed--the German Ruth, looking for expatiation; New Yorker Joan, seeking a life of dedication. Other kibbutzniks--who remain single or have spouses who can't adjust--must inevitably leave. When Joan comments that the second and third kibbutz generations seem ""mediocre and uninteresting"" compared to the first, one cannot help but somewhat agree. For readers of Lieblich's mind, the aura of the kibbutz will put this across; as a study, however, it lacks precision and force.
