Description: Blue Note and Third Man Records celebrate Detroit's jazz legacy with the 2023 "313 Eclipse" series of limited edition reissues selected by Don Was, president of Blue Note Records. Five titles were personally selected from the label's catalog spotlighting Detroit's contributions to the jazz world including: MULTIDIRECTION, by Kenny Cox and the Contemporary Jazz Quintet. This is one of only 313 copies pressed on yellow and black "eclipse" colored vinyl. MULTIDIRECTION was . Mastered by Warren Defever at Third Man Records using the original analog tapes, this edition was made completely in Detroit, the lacquer cut and records pressed by Third Man Pressing in Midtown, only 15 miles from where it was recorded 54 years before. It is presented in a tip-on jacket with Nat Hentoff's original album notes on the jacket's reverse cover. The record was the second and last release by Kenny Cox on Blue Note, a successor to INTRODUCING KENNY COX & THE CONTEMPORARY JAZZ QUINTET. It was recorded by Jim Bruzzese at GM Studios on Nine Mile Road in East Detroit on November 26, 1969. The studio was founded by Guido Marasco and located above an auto repair shop. Soul, funk, jazz, and rock artists recorded at GM Recording Studios from the late '60s on. The name has changed several times but 55 years later, the spot on Nine Mile Road and Beechwood remains a recording studio, and a landmark of the Detroit music scene (even if the locals elected to rename the area Eastpointe). Blue Note's co-founder, Francis Wolff, served as producer and snapped the photo for the record cover. The record mastering was by legendary the Rudy Van Gelder, whose name is etched on more plastic than "Tupperware." Blue Note released the record in 1970 [per jazzdisco.org], catalog # BST 84369. The artists on the recording are: Mr. Kenny Cox on piano, Leon Henderson (tenor saxophone), Charles Moore (trumpet), Danny Spencer (drums), and Ron Brooks (bass). TRACKS: Spellbound Snuck InSojournMultidirectionWhat Other OneGravity Point All tracks were composed by Kenny Cox or Charles Moore. From 1969 into the mid-70s, the two operated Strata Records, releasing a handful of jazz, soul, funk, and avant-garde records from the Detroit underground scene, interspersed with two more CJQ records and "Clap Clap (The Joyful Noise)" by Kenny Cox. Charles Moore's name is writ large in another chapter of Detroit's music history, as he was a founding member of the Detroit Artist Workshop in late 1964—a collective which still operates today.
