ITEM DESCRIPTION: Here is an Absolutely Gorgeous & Very Rare Antique 1906 Halftone Lithographic Print in the Arts & Crafts Style of a Beautiful French Architectural Rendering of a Medieval Castle “Le Château d’Azay-le-Rideau, France”, by the famous listed American artist, illustrator & muralist ‘Jules Vallée Guérin’ (American, 1866-1946), whose printed signature appears lower right in the image corner. We have several other Rare Jules Guérin Prints currently listed, so please have a look. ‘Copyright, 1906, University Art Shop, Evanston, Ill.’, as appears printed very small lower left in the image corner. The University Art Shop published a series of 12 prints called the Jules Guérin Prints (or sometimes listed as just the Guérin Prints) in 1906 for use in colleges & universities as well as other various school/classroom decorations and study (of which we only had 7 left of the 12 in our archive). Please see our University Art Shop company bio below. The Larger (about 24” x 16”) Guérin Prints sold for $6.00 back in the day which equals about $150- in today’s dollar, which was fairly expensive to purchase even back at that time period, and the smaller ones (about 15” x 10”) sold for $3.50 which equals about $85- in today’s dollar—also quite spendy. The Print is on a nice medium weight cream-colored wove paper stock and is in VeryGood-Excellent Rare+ condition for its antique age with no color fade at all on this wonderful piece-Wonderful Rich Color! This Print has been in a drawer amongst other lithos & prints since it was purchased by the Meibohm family and hasn’t seen the light-of-day in all this time…It’s as beautiful as the day it was printed-Simply Stunning! This Print is pretty much as good as any collector could hope to find in its original never-framed condition. The size is 23-15/16” x 15-15/16”. No Tears! Extremely minimal (maybe only a handful or so) of tiny foxing specks here & there on the sheet which are only noticeable from behind and certainly aren’t worth mentioning. The Print was originally tipped (glued along its top edge from behind), to a larger backing stock when it was first made and sold, and as a result, it caused a light wavy-cockling with a crescent fan-like slight puckering appearance (corner-to-corner rounded crescent shape) to the upper edge area of the paper itself, from the drying & subsequent shrinkage of the glue and it’s affect on the paper and is Not Creasing and isn’t too bad at all and may flatten out well if the piece is drymounted to an archival backing stock, and may not show at all once it is framed-up & behind glass (The slight puckering is evident on all of the other vertical ‘Portrait Style’ lithos we have listed which had also been removed from their original backing stocks a long time ago.). Extremely minimal (only a handful or so) of very small & slight crescent creases here & there on the sheet which aren’t even noticeable and also not worth mentioning. Slight outer edge wear with slight chipping/flaking and a few dents & dings here & there which are all completely negligible and can easily be matted & framed out. Extremely minimal slight creasing here & there along a few outer edges & corner edges and a also a few small dog-ear creases in a couple corners—which are also negligible and can be easily matted & framed out. Slight normal toning of stock from age but isn’t really that noticeable from the front. Minimal slight surface scuffing/scratching here & there which aren’t too noticeable at all and certainly don’t detract from this beautiful piece at all. This beautiful & rare antique print has never been framed which is always more desirable to collectors since it has never been exposed to older non-archival materials, matburn or lightfade. Simply beautiful! University Art Shop Company Bio: The University Art Shop, Inc. (American Art Publishers, c1906-c1921) was located in the downtown Evanston, IL landmark office building, at 208 University Building 1604-1606 Chicago Avenue. The University Art Shop sold halftone lithographs in the Arts & Crafts style of historic American architectural landmarks and French châteaus from the famous American artist, illustrator & muralist Jules Vallée Guérin (American, 1866-1946), and color reproductions of paintings by the well known artist Frits (Fritz) Thaulow (Norwegian, 1847-1906) as well as Arts & Crafts motto prints, historical reprints, greeting cards, religious prints, various Venetian & Italian scenes and landmarks, hand colored place cards, bookmarks and various other art novelties. The company was run by the avid art collector Charles Addison Wightman (American, 1861-) who was then president of the company and is known for the former Wightman Memorial Art Gallery (formerly Bond Hall) which was located in the Library of the University of Notre Dame. The Wightman Memorial Art Gallery was named in honor of his late wife Cecelia after Charles had donated 108 paintings to the college in 1924, and it later became part of the Snite Museum of Art at the University of Notre Dame in 1980. F.H. Walker was the Treasurer & Secretary of the company. In 1906, the University Art Shop published a series of 12 halftone lithographic color prints in the Arts & Crafts style called the “Jules Guérin Prints” (or just Guérin Prints) which consisted of many well known American landmark buildings and famous French châteaus (castles) to include; “The White House, Washington”, “The Washington Monument (Nocturne Scene)”, “The Library of Congress, Washington (Jefferson Building)”, “Library of Columbia University”, “Independence Hall, Philadelphia”, “Smithsonian Institution, Washington”, “The Capitol, Washington”, “Christmas Night-Old Trinity, New York”, “Le Château d’Azay-le-Rideau, France”, “Château of Langeais, France”, “Château Lynes (Luynes), France”, “Château Amboise, France”, and I believe other Guérin prints may have been added after that. The “Guérin Prints” were first published in 1906 for use in colleges & universities as well as other various school/classroom decorations and picture study and were issued in two sizes large (about 24” x 16”) and small (about 15” x 10”). The larger “Guérin Prints” were beautifully reproduced and sold for $6.00 back in the day which equals about $150 in today’s dollar, which was fairly expensive to purchase even back at that time period and the smaller ones sold for $3.50 which equals about $85—also quite expensive. The Thaulow prints were also beautifully reproduced and were only a few inches larger (18” x 22”) than the “Guérin Prints” and sold for a whopping $12.00 (mounted) which equals about $300 in today’s dollar. We have had numerous problems in the past communicating with our eBayers outside of eBay because of it. COLLECTORS & DEALERS: Please DO NOT email us (inside or outside of eBay's email system) with any offers to stop an auction early.
