About This Print: Today, very fine but totally sterile modern buildings have replaced the characteristic old structures that once lined both sides of the Milwaukee River. Behind this viewpoint, to the north, was a large lumberyard where lake schooners would berth to unload their cargoes. The Milwaukee River threads north and south, paralleling the shoreline of Lake Michigan, and as it flows through the downtown section it passes under some twelve or fifteen swing bridges, each section forming a basin, and each being a little port of its own.
