Description: JOHN QUINCY ADAMS [FOREWORD BY TEXE MARRS]. LETTERS ON FREEMASONRY. Austin TX: Rivercrest Publishing. REPRINT. 2001 [1933, 1847]. xii (12) + xl (40) + 284 pages. Octavo (8 1/4 by 5 1/4 inch) softcover. Slightest bump top corner rear, o/w FINE CONDITION. This collection of letters, originally titled LETTERS ON THE MASONIC INSTITUTION, represent a virulently Anti-Masonic tract by the 6th President of the United States. His negative reaction to Freemasonry seems to have been based mainly on the so-called “Morgan Affair,” which touched off a wave of anti-Masonic sentiment throughout the U.S.A. in the early to mid 19th-century. The 40 page introduction, which is not directly attributed to the President and thus stands unattributed, provides background to the then present anti-masonic sentiment in America, and comments on Adam’s particular association with and contribution to that sentiment. Was then Adams himself merely a political opportunist, using the anti-Masonic sentiment of the time to aid him in his political career? or did he have true concerns as a servant of Democracy regarding the presence and possibly dangerous potentiality of Secret Societies in a free society? For a careful and thoughtful reader, the answer perhaps lies here. It should be pointed out that all of the letters collected here were written in 1931, after his presidential term had passed, but that he afterwards ran for and won numerous terms in Congress right up to the end of his life, and that he was affiliated with the Anti-Masonic Party, which at one point became virtually the country's first third party. It should also be pointed out that the so-called "Morgan Affair" is not the cut-and-dried affair that it was made out to be at the time and right up to the present day. The court proceedings which emerged out of the affair were very muddy, the body of Morgan was never found, and there were reports of him re-appearing afterwards in other parts of the country.
