Because old BARONS memorabilia wasn't indexed, and our kinfolks lay unrecognized on some dealer's shelf, I index every story I present as shown below. Your granddaddy might be here. I hope you appreciate the effort. HE WHOM THE BARRENS KILLED HELPED MORE THAN ANYONE ELSE TO INSURE ITS FUTURE. NAMES INDEXED w * indicating pictures below. I search for old stories of the west that have been laid aside, seldom found, rarely seen and unread. The Pioneers of the Old West must not be forgotten--their stories must be recaptured by history. Here is the remarkable story of John Hornby and his life on The Barrens, 500,000 square miles of Artic trunda, treeless nothingness to most folks but life has been sustained on its rolling plains, lakes and muskegs since time began. It was, he said, The Land of Feast or Famine and of him it was said he was the INDIAN OF THE BARRENS WHO RAN THE HOOF'S OFF A RACEHORSE . It was his dream that the Barrens would be preserved and he undertook a dangerous expedition for the Canadian Government to achieve that end. The author chronicles a 1,500-mile journey, which included 600 miles from Artillery Lake. The ultimate result of this journey by Hornby and James C. C. Bullock was the formation by the Canadian Government of the Thelon game Sanctuary, a 50,000 square mile tract. Although Hornby's name has been memorialized by naming of Hornby Bay, Fort Hornby, Hornby Passage, many have forgotten that the life of the Barrens was insured in its natural state by Jack Hornby who died in its frozen tundra. You have not seen it before because if is in this old magazine of many years ago.
