Description: Talinum Paniculatum is an edible perennial shrub that is extensively found throughout much of the Western Hemisphere including the United States as well as the Caribbean. Talinum can also be found in Africa as well as Asia. It is very easy to grow (grows like a weed) and is very rewarding as both a decorative plant as well as an edible succulent that eats much like spinach. The leaves make an excellent addition to both salads as well as sandwiches. The tiny seeds that are produced are highly nutritious and a source of plant Omega 3 healthy oils. Talinum also has medicinal value. In Traditional Chinese medicine it is known as TU-REN-SHEN and is used to tone the digestion, moisten the lungs and promote the production of breast milk. (This information is for educational purpose only, I am not a physician, always consult your physician before using any medicinal plants) Long thin stems shoot from the mature plant producing very pretty pink flowers followed by seed producing fruit that resemble small precious stones, hence the name Jewels of Opar. It is also known as PINK BABY'S BREATH and FAME FLOWER. The tiny seeds produced by the fruit will naturally propagate new seedlings if you have your plant in an area where it can provide a ground cover. You will be eating these greens forever once they start seeding your garden. Younger plants should be transplanted into larger pots or placed in your garden. Another option is to take cuttings from the mature plants when they become older to prevent them from becoming leggy. True to the name Pink Baby's Breath, Talinum also can be used as a cut flower and can be dried. Talinum typically can reach anywhere from 1 to 2 feet tall but there is a variety that when fully grown can reach up to 3 feet producing tuberous like roots with an appearance that is reminiscent of ginseng. The leaves are long, narrow succulent leaves that extend from thin stems with colors anywhere from lime to medium green. During the springtime Talinum will bloom panicles of flowers that range from pink to a red orange coloration depending on location and variety of Talinum. SUNLIGHT: Talinum is fast growing and does best in full sun when grown in places where adequate water is available. It can also be grown in a sunny patio or window location producing more flowers when plenty of sunlight is available. In low lighting conditions the plant will produce less flowers that lack brilliant color. Talinum has been grown successfully in colder zones outdoors but will do best in USDA Hardiness zones 10 and higher. If you are in a colder zone you would do best to protect it from colder temperatures by growing it close to a very warm sunny window location. SOIL: Talinum grows best in ph 6.1 to 6.5 but is tolerant of more alkaline soils. Talinum will grow very well in any good quality, well draining potting soil especially one with perlite to improve water retention since this plant loves water especially during dry hot summers. In the winter, water should be held back until the soil dries out. Grows very well as an edible ground cover that self propagates very quickly if left to it's own devices. Fertilizing is not necessary but will increase the rate of growth when used sparingly. Do not fertilize during winter months. WATER: Keep the soil damp to wet during the summer time for fastest growth especially in intense summer heat. Do not let your plant sit in standing water or roots will rot. I make every effort to ship plants as soon as payment is received. I do not provide hot packs so be mindful of cold temperatures in your area. This deciduous perennial tolerates colder temperatures when it is young preferably no lower than 40 F. For this reason you may need to be present when the post man delivers your package or have someone collect it from your mail box and bring it indoors to warmer temperatures before it gets damaged. I ship all of my plants via USPS FIRST CLASS 2 to 3 day delivery but unfortunately, sometimes the postal service does not deliver on time and packages do sometimes get lost. Unfortunately, this is something that is out of my control. If your plant fails to be delivered or arrives damaged beyond saving, please message me immediately with pictures of both your package and your plant exactly as it appears still secured to the box so that I may correct the problem as soon as possible. THERE IS NO NEED TO LEAVE NEGATIVE FEEDBACK as I always try to answer questions or concerns on a very timely basis, sometimes within minutes of being messaged. Your satisfaction is my greatest concern and I will do everything possible to make things right. GOOD LUCK AND HAPPY GARDENING :)
