This epic print displays the famous Awa Province whirpools, caused by the tide rushing through the Naruto Straits between Awaji Islandand the north-western corner of Tokushima Prefecture on the island of Shikoku. As always with Hiroshige, the composition is all about the vantage point, with the eyes going from the furiously swirling whirpools,to the rocks, battered by foamy waves, then to the fluttering birds and finally to the Awaji island on the horison, with the rosy skies behind it.
