Description: Japanese Shinto Ritual Style Dance Mask Japanese masks are an art form related to ancient customs and cultural beliefs dating back centuries. They are worn in theater, festivals, and in dance and music rituals performed during Shinto ceremonies. Such masks were incorporated into the dance-theatre called Kagura, literally "entertaining the gods." According to the Japan House website, the stories told in the performances were mostly "based on tales from the "Kojiki", an ancient Japanese collection of myths, legends and semi-historical accounts often involving battles between gods and demons." Although originally made of wood, later masks such as the one offered here are created by using Sekishu washi paper made from plants native to the Iwami region of Shimane Prefecture. After the paper dries, a foundation is applied and then the facial details are painted with brushes. The finished masks are hard-wearing yet light with great strength and durability. This mask is in very good condition with minor chips at the top and a crack in the paint at the chin (see photos). The interior has a series of Japanese symbols which I assume could be the signature of the maker and/or mask name.
