Description: This was found at the Ohio/Kansas border in an old golf bag recently. Has never been on the market before. A Sankaku long yari lance with original hadome asymmetrical crossbar and the reinforced upper shaft called the Tachiuchi. The third photo shows that the hadome has snapped in two pieces. The yari is very very tight in the koshirae and I am not going to take it apart to find a mei. That would, in my opinion, ruin the artifact, an intact original Samurai battlefield weapon. This to me is a study piece. The most important aspects of the lance are right here. The method of installing the yari into the oak shaft viewed from the cross section where the pole was cut, the silk thread used to bind the shaft tightly, the lacquer painted over the silk thread to protect it from abrasion, etc.The blade which is very large, thick and very well forged is out of polish and has a smooth grey finish. The blade measures 13.25" to the tachiuchi. The nakago is 14.5". There are a few small areas of old "rust" that have stabilized, though this is a very healthy blade. If you enlarge the image of the break in the hadome you will see that it was forged of several layers of iron including a top layer and pinned together originally. I surmise that it was damaged in antiquity and some one tried to straighten it and it became two pieces. The initial break looks very old and the very outside edge where the rivet can be viewed looks more contemporary. If there is any question about how this was constructed, from shaft to hadome it is answered here. The shaft is red oak (Kashi).
