Description: James Wilson / Missionary Voyage to the Southern Pacific Ocean 1796-1798 1st ed. This former library book was acquired in London as part of a large lot of Pacific island material. The Missionary Voyage of the Ship Duff was published in a series on behalf of the Missionary Society by T.Chapman London in 1799. Captain James Wilson authored the series which chronicled the exploration of numerous Pacific Islands by the officers and missionaries aboard the Duff from 1796-1798. It offers an anthropological peak into the cultures and economics of various island nations…including Tahiti, the Marquesas, Tonga to name a few. Included are charts and topographical maps as well as illustrated scenes from the voyage. The volume itself is in used condition reflecting its age. The red calf spine over marbled boards is rubbed and worn with the edges/corners exposed and bruised. The gilt titles on the spine are hardly visible. The internal marbled pages have large library stickers. The good news is that the binding is relatively tight. The internal pages are gently browned with age and there is isolated foxing. Some of the foldout maps have minor chips and tears. The volume is perfectly readable and could be easily rebound /restored if so desired. Importantly, it is an important chronicle of early South Pacific exploration which is deeply valued for its rich insights into the island nations that they visited. Cleaner copies, if found, sell for between $4500-$5000 on abebooks.
