Description: James Wells Champney Etching Print. Circa 1884. Titled "Never to Late to Mend". Depiction an old tailor sewing. The print is nicely professionally matted and framed. It measures 7" x 10", framed about 12" x 15". Printed on hand laid paper by White, Stokes, and Allen of New York City. It is based on his Champney's painting of the same title. This print is very good condition and shows little aging. James Wells Champney (1843-1903) Born in Boston. At age 16 he was apprenticed as a wood engraver. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in the 45th Massachusetts Volunteers and saw action at Gettysburg. After the war he studied at the Royal Academy of Antwerp and married Elizabeth Williams also an artist. James and Elizabeth collaborated on many works. Elizabeth was also an author and James illustrated her books and magazine articles. He kept a studio in New York, Deerfield, Mass. and later in Paris. Champney worked in many mediums wood engraving, paint, pastels, printmaking and illustration. He tragically died in an elevator accident in 1903
