James Lee Burke was born in Houston, Texas, but spent most of his childhood on the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast. He attended the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and the University of Missouri, receiving a B.A. in English and an M.A. in English from the University of Missouri. He worked in a variety of jobs over the years, while books he had written were rejected, and books he had published went out of print. At various times, he worked as a truck driver for the U.S. Forest Service, as a newspaper reporter, as a social worker on Skid Row, Los Angeles, as a land surveyor in Colorado, in the Louisiana State unemployment system, and in the Job Corps in the Daniel Boone National Forest in eastern Kentucky. He taught at the University of Missouri as a grad student, then at the University of Louisiana, the University of Montana, and Miami-Dade Community College, before settling in Wichita, Kansas to teach at Wichita State University in 1978. Burke and his wife Pearl, née Pai Chu, owned homes in Lolo, Montana and in New Iberia, Louisiana. They have four children, including Alafair Burke, a law professor and best-selling crime writer. Daughter Pamala Burke McDavid died in 2020. Extended family include cousins novelist Elizabeth Nell Dubus and author and actress DeLauné Michel. Burke is the author of such great and famous books as those in the “Dave Robicheaux” series including THE NEON RAIN (offered here), HEAVEN’S PRISONERS, BLACK CHERRY BLUES, A MORNING FOR FLAMINGOES, A STAINED WHITE RADIANCE, IN THE ELECTRIC MIST WITH CONFEDERATE DEAD, and many others, the “Billy Bob Holland” series including CIMARRON ROSE, HEARTWOOD, BITTERROOT, IN THE MOON OF RED PONIES, the “Hackberry Holland” series including WAYFARING STRANGER, HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN, and other standalone novels such as HALF OF PARADISE, TO THE BRGHT AND SHINING SUN, TWO FOR TEXAS, THE LOST GET-BACK BOOGIE and several others. Signed by James Lee Burke on the title page. Clearly James Lee Burke was (and remains) one of the best, most important, most famous, and most collectible mystery/detective authors of all time. From the dust jacket: “ . . . James Lee Burke’s THE NEON RAIN begins with a New Orleans detective visiting a professional killer in the Angola penitentiary hours before his execution. He wants to tell the detective of a jailhouse rumor: there is a contract out on the detective’s life. Dave Robicheaux is the name of the homicide cop — a Viet vet, an outdoorsman, a racetrack and jazz buff, and a recovered alcoholic. His search for his potential hit man takes increasingly strange and unexpected twists. Set up by a ring of drug dealers, Mafia chieftains, and an ex-general with shady dealings in Central America, he’s kidnapped, drugged, and pumped with alcohol. Left for dead in a burning car, Robicheaux survives — but another detective does not. Robicheaux wakes up in a hospital to find that no one believes a farfetched story told by a drunk, and that he’s been suspended from duty. One man who could back him up dies in jail; he finds another murdered, and the identity of the killer is as shocking as the crime. Almost bringing about his own demise by trying to carry out justice without his badge, Robicheaux is rescued by a good woman who more than once saves him from his tormentors — and from himself . . . Tough, violent, but often surprisingly lyrical, THE NEON RAIN is a novel that leads the reader through a maze of intrigue and treachery and blind alleys that can end in sudden death . . . “ From the rear flap of the dust jacket: " . . . James Lee Burke grew up on the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast and now teaches writing and American literature at Wichita State University. He has published five novels, most recently THE LOST GET-BACK BOOGIE, and a short story collection. Burke’s stories have also appeared in prominent literary reviews; one was chosen for Houghton Mifflin’s THE BEST AMERICAN SHORT STORIES of 1986 . . . “ Signed by James Lee Burke on the title page. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ I grade books and dust jackets: fine, near fine, very good, good, fair, and poor. I describe all faults. If you sell books on EBAY (or anywhere else), it is de rigueur not to list 1st printings of book club books as 1st editions (unless they ARE the 1st edition, which occurs only occasionally); also, a 1st edition, 7th printing, is not a 1st edition. Ex-library books must be noted as such since generally they are of little value to the collector of 1st editions. Condition is also very important to those collectors. Books and dust jackets must be described in full. _______________________________________________________________________________________________ CONDITION: A FINE book in a FINE dust jacket. The book is tight and square in its black quarter-cloth and gray boards binding with bright silver lettering on the spine of the book. The book is not spine-leaned; unusual thus. There is no writing in the book (except for James Lee Burke's signature on the title page); no bookplates; no remainder marks (important in that copies of THE NEON RAIN often show up with remainder marks). Please note that the dust jacket is price-clipped, as is often the case.. The dust jacket has no tears, no chips, and no wrinkles, also unusual thus. Overall, this is clearly a collectible 1st edition copy of the first “Dave Robicheaux” novel. Signed by James Lee Burke on the title page. The great and famous and iconic dust jacket artwork is by the excellent artist Irving Freeman. There is a wonderful full-page contemporary photograph of James Lee Burke on the entire rear panel of the dust jacket. A MUST FOR THE COLLECTOR OF HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT MYSTERY/DETECTIVE 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF THE “DAVE ROBICHEAUX” SERIES 1st EDITIONS AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF JAMES LEE BURKE 1st EDITIONS! __________________________________________________________________________________________________
Additional photos are available upon request. I am continuing to list some of my best books (especially science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions) on EBAY not so much as auctions (due to the fact that EBAY charges quite a bit to list items for reserve auctions), but more along the lines of listing my "catalogue" of books that I have for sale. I'm not going to "give" these books away, but my opening bids and Buy-It-Now prices are usually a fair amount below market value. Furthermore, however, for certain scarce books in great condition, I do expect to get close to what they're worth. Stay with me; I always have a number of important, collectible, cornerstone science fiction, fantasy, and horror 1st editions listed. Many thanks! All items are being offered for sale elsewhere; I reserve the right to end this listing early if this item sells elsewhere. Contact me if you're looking for a particular title or titles. I have thousands of books for sale that may or may not show up in my EBAY listings. __________________________________________________________________________ I own the following two books: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY JUSTICE. Subterranean Press, 2014. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY MERCY. Subterranean Press, 2016. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I am looking for: Leckie, Anne. ANCILLARY SWORD. Subterranean Press, 2015. 1st limited edition. (#2/500). I would like to round out this set by acquiring the #2/500 copy of ANCILLARY SWORD. If anyone has this copy and is willing to sell it on EBAY, I would be highly interested in obtaining it so that all my copies would have matching numbers. Many thanks. _____________________________________________________________________________
