Description: J. R. R. TOLKIEN – PICTURES BY J.R.R. TOLKIEN – 1st US ED.!! This book, produced in 1979 by UK publisher George Unwin for its US counterpart, Houghton-Mifflin, is an oversized volume, measuring approximately 12 inches square. It is bound in brown cloth with gold spine lettering and Tolkien’s runeish monogram stamped onto the front panel. The decorated slipcase is intended to resemble older books with leather spines and corners, and colorful decorations on the front panel. The contents are numerous color and black-and-white drawings, from simple sketches to finished pieces of art, as Tolkien envisioned them while writing THE HOBBIT and LORD OF THE RINGS. There is very little text to accompany the art, other than to provide context and description of the scene portrayed. The book is Fine, without dustjacket as issued; the slipcase shows a few small spots of rubbing or abrasion, and there is a separation along the top edge of, perhaps, 5 inches in length. It is not completely disrupted, and does not affect any part of the book or the designs on the slipcase, but it must be noted for accuracy. This is a spectacular book, not often seen offered for sale and, needless to say, long out-of-print.
