Description: Italy, Genoa, biennial doges, gold scudo d'oro, first phase, c. 1528-41 AD. 3.28 g fine gold. Although a coin of the late Renaissance, the types of this issue are very much of the middle ages, and the legends cite Conrad II, Holy Roman Emperor (1027-39 AD), who died roughly 500 years before this coin was struck ! The conservatism of the design hides the fact that this coinage was minted in the context of a political revolution, whereby the old custom of doges holding their position for life was replaced by a tenure of only two years, with election among a franchise of the local aristocracy. VF+, slightly double struck, on an irregular flan but of decent weight. Lundari 190
