Description: Original oil painting by well listed Hungarian/Israeli artist Samuel Lamm (1905-1994). An extremely early work by Lamm, it would date to the late 1940s or early 50s and is very well painted in an impastoed Impressionist style. It is signed by the artist in Hebrew in the upper right and it is framed in a terrific period modernist carved wormy chestnut frame with linen liner, possible by Heydenryk. It is oil on canvasboard and measures 14 1/4 x 18 1/2 inches, with frame it is 20 x 24 inches. The painting panel has a slight belly to it, otherwise excellent condition. Linen liner is age toned and has abraded spots. I acquired this painting in New York City in the late 1970s, most likely it was originally purchased at one of the two solo exhibits that Lamm had in NYC galleries in 1954. Below is a review of one the exhibits from a February 1954 Art Digest Magazine:Samuel Lamm; The landscape and figure paintings by this artist who has made his home in Palestine since 1933 have the strange and colorless appearance peculiar to the Israeli scene. The paint is applied with palette knife in precise and delicate touches which have a serene and almost somnambulistic effect through their continuous repetition. Each work is laden with the timeless atmosphere of the ancient land and in such paintings as Lake Huleh with its becalmed fishing vessels, one can easily visualize the setting of Biblical events. The paintings of figures—of farmers and newsboys and musicians—remind one that Israel has a present as well as a past, a new vigor and determination within an ancient faith which Lamm is well able to convey through his subdued and yet forceful paintings. Samuel (Shmuel) Lamm (1905-1994) was born to a Jewish family in the town of Brody, East Galicia, Poland (now Ukraine). In the late 1920s, Lamm graduated from the Art Academy in Lwow (now Lviv). In 1933 he emigrated to Palestine to pursue an artistic career, in time becoming one of Israel's most prominent Impressionist artists. Awards: 1971, 1975 First Prize for Painting; 1977 Herman Struck Prize; Honored as a Worthy of Haifa.
