Description: From the Preface to the second edition: Since the publication of the First Edition of this book in 1960, the field of matrix theory has expanded at a furious rate. In preparing a Second Edition, the question arises of how to take into account this vast proliferation of topics, methods, and results. Clearly, it would be impossible to retain any reasonable size and also to cover the development in new and old areas in some meaningful fashion. A compromise is, therefore, essential. We decided after much soul-searching to add some new results in areas already covered by including exercises at the ends of chapters and by updating references. New areas, on the other hand, are represented by three additional chapters devoted to control theory, invariant imbedding, and numerical inversion of the Laplace transform.
