An Original letter from Dr Elkins at Des Moines, Iowa, May 31, 1865 to hs niece- is pleased to have received her photograph, his health is good, he works less due to his advanced age and is unable to respond to night calls in bad weather.He gives news of his children and grandchildren . On the vertical margins of the letter he mentions the St Albans Raid by Southern Rebels, that it is wonderful the Rebellion has failed, the "Rebels Drove Andrew Johnson into the White House" from his home in the "mountain State of Tennessee, "Jeff Davis is in Irons in a northern prison" - a "glorious change" and "slavery is abolished forever", the rebellion is crushed and the northern states prosperous.
