Description: Offered here is " I Promessi Sposi " by Alessandro Manzoni, in a one-volume edition published in Italian by Baudry (Paris) in 1845. It also bears the bookseller's mark of Roe, Lockwood & Son, NY. There is an illustrative frontispiece which shows a picture of Manzoni centered among ornate surrounding pictures of authors. There is a tissue guard separating the frontispiece from the title page. This hardcover book is in Good Plus condition. The green leather bound boards have gilt decoration and titles to spine. There is wear to the edges, heavier on the top and bottom edges where the decorative gilt work is not as visible due to rubbing/wear. The corners of the boards also show wear, with some loss of material. The front edge of the spine has a 1/2-inch tear, but remains in tact. Shelf wear includes marks and scratches to the leather. The book block is gilt-edged and shows some scratches and rubbing, more so to the top block. The front and back hinges are partially cracked, but holding. The endpapers are marbled with gilt dentelles. The previous owner's name is printed on the first two blank flyleaves. The pages are age tanned around the edges, with some minor pencil markings on a few pages. A small stain appears on the bottom edge of roughly 40 consecutive pages (ranging from 1mm to 1/2-inch).
