Description: A large and fascinating oil on canvas painting by Péter Benedek (1889-1984) an important Hungarian naive artist. This 1933 oil depicts a Roma camp in the forest outside of Uzod, Hungary. The painting signed and dated by the artist in the lower left in the Hungarian last name first tradition. Good sized, the painting measures 31 1/4 x 31 1/4 inches, outside dimensions with the hardwood frame are 34 1/2 x 34 1/2 inches. The painting is in original condition, it is thinly painted as the artist liked to conserve his materials, there is surface grime, some abrasion to the corners and very slight paint fleck losses, otherwise it is in excellent condition. Péter Benedek (1889-1984) was a Hungarian painter, nationally recognized in his lifetime as a Master of Folk Art. By profession a farmer, Benedek did not receive any art training, he began as an artist to capture the ordinary and festive events of his surroundings, peasant life in his oil, watercolor and pastel paintings. His works represented Hungary at several international exhibitions of naive art. His most important exhibitions were at Budapest: Alkotás Művészház (1923); National Salon (1928); In Vienna: Künstlerhaus (1929). A large scale retrospective exhibition of his work was held in Cegléd in 1964. He had a solo exhibition in Usód and Kalocsá in 1969. In 1970, his work was recognized with the honorary title of Master of Folk Art. Some of his works can be found in the Magyar National Gallery and the Kossuth Museum in Cegléd. There is a Benedek memorial house in Uzód. Several monographs were devoted to his work and he is included in a number of publications on Hungarian art.
