Description: Horatio Nelson Gilt Bust on Oval Bronze Mount – “NELSON OF THE NILE” A Commemorative of the famous British admiral who was killed aboard HMS Victory in the Battle of Trafalgar. The gilt bust of Nelson is 3-3/8 inches and on the underside of the bust reads, “NELSON OF THE NILE.” The bronze oval is 5-5/8 high with applied ring for hanging.Horatio Nelson (1758 – 1805), was an admiral of the British Royal Navy, who his best known for his exploits during the Napoleonic Wars. Nelson was commanding the ship HMS Captain in 1797 during the Battle of the Nile, against the French fleet in the Mediterranean Sea, and apparently this commemorative is honoring Nelson for this battle. In 1805, he was killed by a French sharpshooter firing from the fighting tops, while in command of HMS Victory in the Battle of Trafalgar. He is known for being one of Englands most honored heroic figures. His naval service lasted from 1771 to 1805, and was partially blind in one eye, and lost an arm in combat.I am not sure of the age of this commemorative, but not the period shortly after his death. A single screw holds the bust onto the oval mount.A great looking piece.
