The original honda CB160/175 clutch consists of 5 lined plates with a lining width of 5/16", 4 plain steel plates, and one plain plate with a bend to hold the assembly away from the back of the clutch basket. When that special plain plate in the back of the basket is turned the other way, there is room for an additional lined plate. 160 and early 175 clutch baskets only had side grooves in the aluminum basket cut 27.5mm deep, while later 175 with the exact same aluminum basket were cut to 29mm to make space for the later offset plain plate + one more lined plate; see last photo for the differences. You should make more space for the plates by removing 1.5mm of material from the clutch hub with a lathe, as shown in the later two photos, to allow for heat expansion during racing conditions, or the clutch will not release when hot. First photos of plates inside basket are WITHOUT modification. There are also other Honda models using the same diameter size clutch plate, but with 7/16" wide material, for an increase in surface area of almost one third. Barnett makes CB175 clutch plates with this wider width and they are found on the internet for $13.95 per plate. Our workshop measurements here and my personal experience from 1972 onwards is that the older style material swells with use and after contact with oil, and that can take up all of the free play in the 160 clutch when you add that additional plate. NewFren is an official supplier for Moto 3, the Ferrari factory, and other very high tech applications, and their use of modern materials provides more reliable clutch operation. Please note in the third and fourth photos that there is plenty of room in the clutch when adding the properly sized NewFren extra plate. The measurements of the F.1609 CB175 kit are compared to the F.1667 RC30 kit in the same photo of the Moto 3 press release as a convenient way to show both small items, but the two subjects are not directly related. Our kit is assembled from pieces to include 5 Honda RC30 lined plates and one CB175 lined plate for the back of the basket, plus 4 heavy duty clutch springs (slightly thicker wire than stock CB160, but same length). You will need to add a good used plain clutch plate so that you can use your new clutch with that extra lined plate. This racing clutch will work fine in an otherwise stock bike, as no further modifications are required beyond maching the clutch center hub. Franco may offer properly machined clutch hubs and baskets in the future, as he is able to find good used cores, and you will see them listed in this same eBay store, if they are available. In the future, we will try to supply brand new plain plates. Please check this same eBay store for used 160 clutch plates sold one at a time, or elsewhere on eBay.
